In a nutshell: Sonic Unleashed holds itself back by showcasing less traditional Sonic-style gameplay in favor of generic mindless combat.
Why you should play it: Graphics are nice and colorful. “Sonic” levels are fast and enjoyable.
Why you might want to avoid it: The “Werehog” levels feel way out of place for a Sonic game as they take away from the speed that Sonic is known for. Terrible camera angles cause a lot of frustration. Controls do not always respond the way you would like them to. Focuses too much on running around and talking to people. Often lost and unsure what to do next. Sonic’s new companion is really annoying. Loads of glitches and gaming hiccups that Sonic is now becoming well known for.
Final Thoughts: People looking for a Sonic game should not be fooled by the title. While about half of Sonic Unleashed features speedy hedgehog action, the other half is a poor wannabe “kiddie” version of God of War. It is very sad that this could have been a much better game if not for the out-of-place Werehog levels. Save your money and pop in your old Sonic cartridges instead.
